The story

Most typing tests are silent, flat, and forgettable. NexType started with a simple question: what if every keystroke felt as good as a real mechanical keyboard — and what if the numbers behind your typing actually helped you improve?

So we built per-key audio, a weak-key heatmap, streaks, live multiplayer races, and cloud-synced progress — wrapped in a fast, theme-able, offline-friendly PWA. It's the typing test we always wanted to use.

Frequently asked questions

Everything worth knowing before you start typing.

Is NexType free?+

Yes. NexType is completely free — take unlimited typing tests, check your WPM and race friends without signing up. Signing in only adds optional cloud sync, leaderboards and streaks.

How is my typing speed (WPM) calculated?+

WPM is your net words per minute: every 5 correct characters count as one word, divided by the time elapsed. Accuracy and consistency are measured alongside it, so the score reflects real typing rather than raw speed.

What makes NexType different from other typing tests?+

Every keystroke plays realistic per-key mechanical keyboard sound, and you can race friends live. It also shows a weak-key heatmap, tracks streaks, and syncs your progress across devices.

Can I race friends in real time?+

Yes. Pick a mode, invite someone by their @username or share a link, and race head-to-head live. In timed races the highest WPM wins; in word and quote races the first to finish wins.

Do I need to install anything or create an account?+

No. NexType runs in any modern browser and works offline as a PWA, so you can add it to your home screen. No download or account is required to start typing.

Which typing modes does NexType support?+

Timed tests (15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds), fixed word counts, quotes, and real code snippets — with easy or hard word pools, optional punctuation and numbers, and multiple languages.

What is a good typing speed (WPM)?+

The average typing speed is around 40 words per minute (WPM). Anything above 60 WPM is considered good, 80+ WPM is fast, and professional typists often sustain 100+ WPM. NexType shows your live WPM so you can see exactly where you stand and improve.

What is the average typing speed?+

The average adult types about 40 WPM on a physical keyboard. With regular practice most people comfortably reach 60–70 WPM, and touch typists frequently exceed 90 WPM.

How can I improve my typing speed?+

Practise regularly, keep your accuracy high before chasing speed, use all ten fingers (touch typing rather than looking down), and drill your weakest keys. NexType's weak-key heatmap shows precisely which keys are slowing you down so you can target them.
